Preparing to Frag ....
How many times have you fragged coral? Do you follow a pattern when fragging like:
- Prepare an area for your coral
- Prepare a dish to place the fragged items in
- Adjust lighting for good vision
- Place frag tools within reach
- Locate a tray or towel to place you coral on
You do all this before you even reach into the tank to get the colony. Taking proper safety precautions needs to be a part of your preparation too.
From a popular reef forum:
"You can see some side effects from the palytoxin, but the worst cases I've heard have been people getting blood poisoning (assuming it came from something on the zoas they were fragging). Their hands might swell up and get white streaks leading towards the shoulder. The worst I've ever gotten is a numb arm, a dizzy feeling and a numb, dry, waxy taste in my mouth (two occasions after hours of fragging). It will enter through a small cut or mucous membrane, typically, so people recommend using gloves and protective eyewear. You do want to wash your hands before touching your mouth after being in the tank, but that is a given."
People react differently to even the mildest of toxins. Some people may be allergic and not even know it. A few years ago a member of our team spent the night on an IV in the hospital because of toxin poisoning. We take frag safety very seriously.
Minimum Safety Items needed:
This is the bare minimum. Look through the list of items we have compiled. We use these items every time we frag. |
